IASOA Data Portal

The IASOA Data Portal is designed to inventory the different types of measurements taken at each of the observatories, and whenever possible to provide links for accessing the data either through on-line, openly accessible archives or through institutional contacts for requesting data. Because of the variety of data collected at the IASOA observatories, this is a complex and evolving process. The IASOA community of data collectors is strongly encouraged to contribute to this effort by augmenting and checking the data portal information on a regular basis. To provide input for the IASOA Data Portal, please contact sandy.starkweather@noaa.gov.

Data Management This IASOA data access portal is developed through two different means from contributing IASOA observatories: 1) Hand-authored metadata (i.e. metadata that has been manually created) 2) Working cooperatively with several archives to automatically harvest their existing metadata IASOA has implemented the ISO-19115-2 metadata standard, which follows the template below and this schema tree, to automatically harvest data. Our objective is to be as non-duplicating as possible. It is always our first choice to work with archives to translate their existing metadata into our ISO-19115-2 schema.
Data Policy •Document all datasets using metadata that is compliant with international data management procedures. •Use machine readable interfaces (e.g. xml) •Use flexible and domain generated vocabularies to describe datasets, support crosswalks in the background. •Create recommended standards for file formats (date formats, etc.) and interfaces to data that will simplify access to and utilization of GCW datasets. •Wherever possible facilitate machine interfaces to datasets, enabling higher order services to be built on data by e.g. AMAP and other relevant bodies.
Data Sharing Principle The IASOA Steering Committee provided the following feedback on specific data sharing goals to support our mission: a) IASOA will document all datasets using metadata that is compliant with international data management procedures. b) IASOA will provide a unified catalog of all IASOA datasets through its own data portal. c) IASOA will create a list of recommended standards for file formats and interfaces to data that will simplify access to and utilization of IASOA datasets. d) IASOA will announce datasets in global catalogs like (GCMD, WMO Information System and GEOSS) using machine interfaces. e) Wherever possible IASOA will facilitate machine interfaces to datasets, enabling higher order services to be built on data by e.g. Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program (AMAP) and other relevant bodies
