copernicus Marine service

The Copernicus Marine Service (or Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service) is the marine component of the Copernicus Programme of the European Union. It provides free, regular and systematic authoritative information on the state of the Blue (physical), White (sea ice) and Green (biogeochemical) ocean,  on a global and regional scale.   It is funded by the European Commission (EC) and implemented by Mercator Ocean International. It is designed to serve EU policies and International legal Commitments related to Ocean Governance, to cater for the needs of society at large for global ocean knowledge and to boost the Blue Economy across all maritime sectors by providing free-of-charge state-of-the-art  ocean data and information. It provides key inputs that support major EU and international policies and initiatives and can contribute to: combating pollution, marine protection, maritime safety and routing, sustainable use of ocean resources, developing renewable marine energy resources, supporting blue growth, climate monitoring, forecasting, and more. It also aims to increase awareness amongst the general public by providing European and global citizens with information about ocean-related issues.

Data Management Users are explicitly and transparently involved: user’s needs drive service evolution, with work to translate user requirements into achievable service evolution objectives.Scientific (observations, modelling, data assimilation) and technological (e.g. computing capabilities, information systems) advances relevant for CMEMS shall be fully taken into account. Lessons and knowledge derived during the initial phases of the service are used to drive the service change and/or service upgrade.Delineation with downstream activities: the core service focuses on activities best performed at pan-European scale. Transparency about CMEMS evolution with respect to downstream sectors.Service evolution R&D activities can be broken down into different categories (Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3), with different time scales and players/actors.
Data Policy The Copernicus Programme is overseen by the European Commission’s Directorate General of Defence Industry and Space (DG DEFIS), and the market uptake of Earth observation and space data and services in both public and private sectors is a top priority. A core tenant of the Copernicus Programme is the free and open provision to data, thus the EU Member States and the international community alike can rely on our services to implement their policies.Through the Copernicus Programme and the Copernicus Marine Service, the EU develops assets for:EU marine policies, programs and initiatives;Underpinning international legal commitments towards a sustainable ocean;Supporting States and local institutions to uphold marine related regulations
Data Sharing Principle The expertise and products of the Copernicus Marine Service bring value to national services and bodies implementing public policies by supplying scientifically assessed, relevant, and free ocean information. The Copernicus Marine Service produces:Ocean physics and biogeochemics data; The Ocean Monitoring Indicators, a growing portfolio of essential ocean variables used to evaluate ocean health; The Ocean State Report, an annual assessment of the state of the ocean
