CASIWAL Presentation NO.2

Abstract: Interactions between the land surface and climate are complex as a range of physical, chemical and biological processes take place. Changes in the land surface or climate can affect the water, energy and carbon cycles in the Earth system. Process models provide opportunities to disentangle different processes in the Earth system and do future predictions under climate scenarios, in order to investigate the feedbacks between the land surface and climate. This talk will present several modelling studies regarding to the land surface and climate interactions in the boreal zone, including multi-site evaluation of modelled methane emissions over northern wetland, peatland forestation impacts on climate conditions in Finland, assessment of drought indicators and response of water use efficiencies to drought in a boreal Scots pine forest. short-bio: Yao Gao is currently a senior research scientist in the Carbon Cycle Modelling Group at the Climate System Research Unit at Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI). She finished her PhD study in FMI and Helsinki University in 2016. Her research interests focus on land-biosphere-atmosphere interactions, including energy, water and carbon cycles of the Earth System. In her studies, regional climate model and land surface model are used as the main research tools, in combination with various measurement data.
